The characters in this story are written in such a way they are real and believable. I’d love to meet them. Some of the characters I really got a kick reading about. Aunt Ivy is one character whom I’d love to meet. She’s spunky and full of life.
Now I can’t forget to mention this tale also has some swoon-worthy moments. Reese and Heath have a hard time not heating up the scenes too much! But what’s a romance novel without romance?
I will carry this story in my heart and smile when I think of it. I highly recommend you pick it up, also look for the next books in this series. I think we’ll all love this piece of Oregon flair.

I like the premise for this series. Three childhood best friends - Reese, Nia, and Kristina - grew up in Chapel Cove. As adults, each has gone their own way and lived their lives. Suddenly at the cusp of their 40th birthday (all within days of each other) they have all found themselves back in Chapel Cove for various reasons. Some would say it's fate, still others would know it's simply God handiwork to complete the plans He has for their lives.
In this book we meet all the main characters from Chapel Cove - Reese, Kristina, and Nia, although this particular book centers around Reese. Reese couldn't wait to get out of Chapel Cove to make it big as a supermodel. But then right before her 40th birthday everything blows up in her face. Reese finds herself back home. No career. No husband. No babies. Just Reese and her finalized divorce papers. Her mom is ready to set her up with the youth pastor from their church. Reese isn't even thinking about men right now though. Her entire world just collapsed and now she feels like nothing will ever go right. That point gets driven home when she accidentally runs into Heath. Sigh. Her teen crush. Her first love. And, boy, is he hot! So hot that Reese realizes maybe she should meet that youth pastor to start dating him. Anything to stop drooling over Heath. Heath is shocked to see Reese because he never stopped loving her. Even if he did never tell her. She disappeared right after the night of their first date to go to New York to become a supermodel. Through circumstances beyond their control Reese and Heath get thrown together for a day. This could be the second chance Heath has always wished for. But is it what God has planned?
Once again I am loving how Marion Ueckermann includes God in her books. I am a huge fan of Christian author's that let their characters show their faith by how they behave & talk. Ms. Ueckermann does a fabulous job of this in all her books, but I really felt it in this one. Despite having a hero that is a Pastor there are no sermons in this book. Yet, I could feel the presence of God throughout the entire book. These are the perfect books to share with my secular friends!!! They don't get turned off because it's a Christian romance. Heck, over half the time they don't even realize it until after they've finished the book.
The next thing that really struck me was the way Marion Ueckermann was given the huge task of starting this series. Not only did she writing this fabulous book, she had to lay the groundwork for the whole series! She introduced readers to the main players, the side characters, the town, and the premise behind the entire project. That's a lot to do in one book! Yet, it was done with such ease and so well. I have a good grasp on the story line concept for the series. I feel like I know Reese, Nia, and Kristina fairly well. (More Reese than the others, but I did just spend a couple few hours with her too so...) I think I am already in love with Chapel Cove. Ready to pack my bags and move there at this point! I love the side characters that I have met so far - Dr. Johnson & Aunt Ivy are such great characters. I also liked Hudson and hope I'll get to meet Hunter as well. I hope they get their own book in the series, after Nia & Kristina of course. I can't wait to meet the other town's people as the series progresses. I think the side characters have the ability to make a book really good, or can sink it. I love all the characters in this series so far.
I also thought it was great that there were references at the end of the story. Scripture references for each Bible verse, from each chapter that has the entire verse(s) that were referenced written out completely. Had I realized this was there before I started reading I probably would've spent less time shuffling between the book and my Bible. NOT that I am complaining mind you. Any excuse to crack open the Good Book. I just thought it was a great idea and a really neat addition. Now I sit here and wonder if she's done this before and I just didn't pay attention. Oh, well regardless - it's a really cool addition that I was happy to find.
I loved this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series! - Very heartwarming, although sometimes heartbreaking, story filled with renewed hope of forgiveness, healing, trust, second chances, and new beginnings. The fictional town of Chapel Cove became so vivid in my mind that I wanted to linger in it, and even wished I could visit it in real life. Any reader can relate to wondering about the "what-if's" and the "why's" that are part of the characters' struggles in this story. I love this quote "Jesus didn't react to betrayal in the way humans did. Instead of running in the other direction, not wanting anything to do with those who've lost their way, lost their first love, He went in search of them, determined to find His lost children and bring them home." This is a story that will capture your heart and imagination and will remain with you past the last word.
- Clarise, or Reese as she preferred to be called had dreams when she was 13, the major one – becoming a supermodel. She fulfilled that dream but as she comes home to Chapel Cove just before she turns 40, three other of those 5 things she was going to attain have eluded her. Heath has loved her for years and is hoping he’ll be given a chance to win her heart. Beautiful story, where we are introduced to these two, along with Reese’s best friends, Heath’s brother and a few townspeople. Looking forward to what’s ahead in this series, and who is featured and/or introduced.

- This was absolutely terrible and not funny and not interesting. Yuck
- This book had me in stitches from page one. It’s a collection of short essays and the content rings true for anyone who has experienced this thing called life. The author is a modern day Erma Bombeck. I learned so many Southern Lady codes that I fear I’m becoming a Southerner - not a bad thing!
- A fun book of amusing essays, many of which I could relate to on multiple levels. Beneath the humor, there’s a sense of a warm, caring woman who knows who she is and what she wants. This is a woman who’d be fun to have as a friend. Easy read.
- I would read a shopping list if Helen Ellis wrote it. I loved this book.
- Everything my momma taught me, explained in the funniest and most honest way possible! You won't be disappointed with this book.

Southern Lady Code is a title that carries a code of its own. Some people use the word “lady†to describe European royalty; some to describe a courteous woman, which is what I anticipated here; and some use it to describe a well-mannered woman with a very comfortable income, which appears to be the author’s operating definition. In terms of the “code,†I thought I’d be reading straight satire, but discovered that she has provided a combination of self-help tips and searing, sometimes raucous humor. It works surprisingly well.
I have never made a cheese log before or wanted one, but Ellis’s recipe sounds so persuasively delicious that I may try it. That said, my favorite essays were short on advice and long on humor. I nearly hurt myself laughing over the construction man she found masturbating in her bedroom—did I mention that she gets a little edgy here? And “The Ghost Experience†is massively entertaining. There’s a lot of good material. Though at times her outlook is a little more conservative than my own, I like the things she says in support of gay and trans friends.
Ultimately, I suspect that I am not the target audience for Ellis, who in her middle-aged years is dispensing life skills wrapped in bountiful amounts of humorous anecdotes. She is writing to her peers and to those women younger than herself. I am ten or twenty years older than this woman, but I still came away impressed. So, ladies and women, if you can look past the assumption of a greater-than-average income, you’ll have a good time here, and if you can’t, try to get this collection at the library and read selectively, because more of these essays will resonate than not, for all of us.
I rate this book four giggles, and it will be available to the public tomorrow, April 16, 2019. - If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - any book that can make me laugh out loud immediately wins its place on my metaphorical shelf of books worth reading.
Southern Lady Code is a short, snappy book full of hilarious essays by Helen Ellis about her life as a woman who grew up in the South. Interestingly enough, I'm not sure I would call this a "southern" work in the way that books by Joshilyn Jackson or William Faulkner are absolutely steeped in southern culture and setting. Ellis has spent a large part of her adult life in New York, and a lot of the stories are very "upper crust NYC" in their sensibilities. The title comes into play as she examines all of the different experiences she has in her life through the lens of this "code" that she learned from growing up in the south. The code is in her own words - "a technique by which, if you don't have something nice to say, you say something not-so-nice in a nice way." As someone who has spent her whole life in the South, I can confirm that almost everything she says is true - it is (unfortunately) not some over-exaggeration of the characteristics of a "southern lady."
Despite this, I don't think that someone would need to be from the south to enjoy this collection - I think it has something to appeal to all women, as it's really about life as a modern American woman. She holds absolutely nothing back, and shares anecdotes that will have you barking with laughter.

- This is a great book. Even if you haven't yet lost a pet or even own one, you'll be able to comfort someone unsure if their pet will be in heaven. The book does require something of you. You must believe God reveals some things line upon line, precept upon precept as it states in Isaiah. If you need God to come right out and say, "Your pet is in heaven" you'll never be comforted. That's a thing about God, it takes getting to know Him to know what He does/will do/etc. The only way to really know Him is through His word. So that requires reading, well, actually studying the Bible.
That's what makes this book so great. The author builds an excellent scriptural case and provides the actual scriptures for those who get easily agitated by having to go from book to Bible to book and back. Now, I believe you should ALWAYS check it out in your Bible, is the scripture really there? Is it referred to in context? And I think by even by preventing this small source of agitation for the reader, a bit of the heart of the author is revealed.
It's a very short book, an inspirational read and a very help in time of mourning. 7 stars. - I recently lost my precious bug and have been having a very hard time. This book will definitely comfort you and will be a good step in your grieving process.

- I was unimpressed with this book. Losing my sweet Jake was do traumatic and I am still struggling to carry on. This book was dry and honestly I had a really hard time figuring out what many of the Bible quotes had anything to do with animals. It is a very short book and I am not even going to finish it.

- I was sceptical about purchasing this item after reading countless reviews of people recieving the reprint which had updated, bland art, but it I looked at the dates of the reviews from 2016 as opposed to reviews from 2018 and the reviews from 2018 showed that people were now recieving the books that had the original art as opposed to 2016 where people were getting the updated version. From a customer perspective it was very confusing deciding which reviews to trust because one says that the books do not include the original art and some say do have them. After deciding to purchase the item regardless I was very relieved to see the beloved books I used to love reading. In conclusion people recieved the updated art a couple years ago and left bad reviews because of that, but it seems that whoever is responsible for selling these books responded to the backlash and began selling the books with the original art that we know and love from our chilhoods.
- If I had seen that the art had been changed I wouldn't have even purchased this. I'm very disappointed. The original books had such great, creepy artwork. This version has really generic, cartoony pictures.
- These are NOT the original drawings. The drawings or illustrations were half the fun! They were often scarier than the stories themselves. This sucks.
Picture one is what I got, picture two is what it used to be. Please warn people that this is not the original artist and show a sampling of the inside of the books. I gather that's why it's not advertised, though. Some people like me wouldn't have spent (wasted) the money on it if they had known the original artist wasn't used. - THE ORIGINAL ART IS BACK!!! I ordered this collection without reading the reviews (big mistake) so, when I saw that everybody was complaining about the books NOT having the original art I was so disappointed, but it was too late to cancel so I decided to return them in arrival, but to my surprise I happily realized that the collection they sent includes the original art that everybody loves!!! So don't hesitate, buy it, it's worth it. Beautiful books, beautiful art, total satisfaction 😊
- This is a review for the 2017 reprint of the "Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark" trilogy.
A few years back when the original Stephen Gammell illustrations were removed from these books, my heart sank. Newer generations would never know the absolute terror that waited for them between each page thanks to Gammell's nightmarish art... until now. Scholastic listened to the outcry from all the adults who grew up trying to avoid the empty look from the ghost with hollow eye sockets in "The Haunted House" or the cobweb-ridden corpse of the tragically trapped woman in "The Bride."
The stories and illustrations are just as enjoyable and spooktacular as they were when the books were first published. Welcome back, Schwartz and Gammell! - I was very disappointed to find that the art in this set is completely different from what they used to have. All of the artwork has been replaced with super generic art that you could find anywhere, instead of the wonderful illustrations that were more chilling that the stories themselves! I have no idea why they would do such a thing.
- I am furious. I have just found out that this COWARDLY publishing company has taken what was, for many of us, a classic work of spooky children's literature and swapped out the Stephen Gammell illustrations for saccharine sweet, homogenized, overly sweet, not-even-remotely-spooky illustrations by Brett Helquist.
Many of us grew up with the Scary stories to tell in the Dark collection by Alvin Schwartz and were haunted by the gorgeous and creepy artwork of Stephen Gammell. Stephen's artwork is part of what made these books so haunting, so notorious. And now they have brutally altered these books beyond reprieve.
Not only did the cowards quietly change the artwork, after standing by the artistic integrity of this collection for thirty years, bu they do it for the thirtieth anniversary edition on-ward!
To change this is like changing the original Dr. Seuss Illustrations or the original Alice in Wonderland illustrations. it's just not right. This was a shameful movie by a cowardly company giving in to long standing pressure that the pictures were "too scary."
Brett Helquist is not a bad artist. But he was used here as a pawn for an overly politically correct move to make a collection of scary stories "tamer" and "more acceptable." A move that would have insulted the likes of Ray Bradbury.
If there is any integrity left at all they will restore the Stephen Gammell illustrations. - So glad this set was released. I grew up reading these gems and am delighted to see that they've been faithfully restored to their former glory. All of the original artwork is included, unlike the previously released set that was somewhat sanitized. I enjoyed these books immensely in elementary school and now looking upon them as an adult, I still find them entertaining. I purchased this for my nephew and he too is enjoying them. Fair warning, yes, the images tend to favor the macabre and even the grotesque (google image for a taste). Having said that, know your audience. You may want to start by reading these stories to your children and selectively showing them the artwork after you've gauged their tolerance.
Give them a whirl, if you dare....

Leider hatten sich aufgrund der umfangreichen Änderungen der letzten Auflage durch die Umstellung auf die neuen gesetzlichen Regelungen auch einige Fehler eingeschlichen, die wir bei dieser Neuauflage ebenfalls korrigiert haben.

- I think this is such an important topic, I was super excited to read this book when it came out. But ultimately it was difficult to read and didn't grow my competence in this space.
Writing
I felt like each paragraph was written on post-it notes, confusingly assembled, spliced with cute illustrations, and mixed with anecdotes called out in a different color. It seems like a randomly assembled set of blog posts. I had a hard time understanding how each paragraph and section built on each other. Yes, maybe they were related, but I wanted growth, expansion, to a crescendo of insight and conclusion. Instead my brain was constantly fighting the book thinking, where am I now, is this snippet important or that one?

The depth of each idea is therefore so unsatisfying. I want to spend money on a book to get further depth on a topic, and this just made me work so hard for the insight. The authors do a good job surveying current thought on the topic, but a sentence here about Adam Grant or a a quick picture about Seligman's 3Ps left me feel like this was a buffet of snippets of other people's ideas. It's hard for me to point out what specifically the authors are adding to this space, except to articulate that emotion is important at work. It is, and thank you for making that statement, but this book will not be the reference I use to make the argument to my colleagues.
This is an important topic, and the illustrations are good. (thus a 2 star rating) . But this isn't the book to start the revolution that's needed. I ultimately feel tricked by the business publishing industry that took successful blog content, repackaged it in a common format with varying colors, pictures, and a take away section, and smattered some good endorsements. Penguin, I want my time back. - Everyone should read this book, if you’re just entering the workforce, the CEO or someone in between. It’s helpful for millennials and their bosses to bridge the communication divide. The comics are brillant and I’ve alreay used a couple in some feedback sessions. Highly recommend as gifts or for self improvement. So many times during this book I thought “wow that’s me†or “oops, I better stop/start doing thatâ€.
- Once upon a time not long time ago, I bumped into the Instagram account of LizAndMollie. I couldn’t help but anticipating the next clever illustration-explanation. I bought the book and just didn’t want to put it down till I finish it. I appreciated deeply how it covers most aspects of emotions at work with simplicity, humor and resourcefulness. I can sense the research and refinement that was done to put this through. As someone that has read some of the indicated books and articles that are mentioned, I felt the mashup was not only useful to develop a broad understanding but also a point of reference to go back to when I want to expand my knowledge. Last but not least I kept some practical tips that can be actionable right away (like starting a decision journal). Would recommend this to anyone that would like to feel inspired about knowing more about emotions.
- As a young professional in a workplace with a lot of older colleagues, it can be hard to know how much of my "self" to bring to and share at work. This book provides helpful tips for how to handle different work situations and embrace the emotions that we often try to push away. The book is full of hilarious and relatable comics that made realize how universal many of my feelings are and the authors' personal anecdotes are interesting and entertaining!

Additionally, the illustrations are incredibly accurate depictions of some of the most common, real-world, sticky situations and keep you smiling through each chapter. A must read for anyone in the workplace and a great gift for teams looking to connect in more meaningful and effective ways. - The illustrations are great, which makes this book fun to read. The book is also relatively quick to read. The authors go over some important topics about workplace interaction. Throughout the book, the authors cite the research they are basing their work on. So it's a good starting point that covers a lot of research and best practices on emotions in the workplace. If you want to dig deeper, just follow the footnotes.
- There has been a lot written recently about the relationship millennials have to work; in a nutshell, we're consumed by it. Liz and Mollie have an alternative point of view be less passionate about your job. This is just one counterintuitive, but really helpful, piece of career advice shared in their book. If you find yourself thinking about how much of your whole self to bring to work, when and how to share what you're really feeling, how to make decisions and find motivation, and how to be both a teammate and a leader, this book will provide a wealth of insight for you. Combining personal anecdotes, social science research, business case studies, and amazing illustrations, No Hard Feelings is funny, true (funny because it's true), and source of comfort and guidance in navigating all the emotions of the modern workplace.
